The power of counselling
Sometimes nothing seems to go right for us. We are down and troubled. Our lives are dark. Our worries are huge. What is worse we do not know who to turn to! It’s not because we do not want help. No. It is because we are overwhelmed with pain. We are drowning in it.
I have felt that way for years. There was no one I could talk my heart out to. No one to hear my cries. I was wrong.
One day, a teacher said to me, “Dom, your mind, your body, and soul cannot hold all that pain. You need to share it with someone.” I couldn’t because I had become so desensitized to pain.
I never forgot my teacher’s words, “you need to share it with someone.” so, I began to see a Counsellor. A Counsellor is someone you have a professional relationship with to experience healing, wholeness, personal growth, self-awareness, and self-confidence ( pelling , et. al., 2007, p. 12). I have never looked back because seeing a counsellor has helped me in three ways:
- I embrace my past.
- I acknowledge my strengths and weaknesses.
- I have grown in self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-esteem.
I realize the road ahead is not easy. But my life is an example of the transformative benefits of seeing a counsellor.
